mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: Times; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Nelson Mandela in a May 8, 1995 speech in Pretoria, South Africa<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On December 1st I went to Oak Park High School in Oak Park, MI.\u00a0 A first ring school just outside of Detroit.\u00a0 Principal Kwame Stephens along with Solution Tree Author Dr. Anthony Muhammad, provided myself and Stefan Kohler with a morning tour of the school, and some great conversation about struggling schools and what needs to happen to help the students.\u00a0 Kwame is working hard to change the culture of the school, and Anthony is a best selling author on school culture, a very critical first steps to getting students to proficiency levels.\u00a0 Kwame has only been at this school since August, but already he is making a big difference, and you can see excitement in both the faculty and the students.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll keep us all posted on their success.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I was reading an article summary in Marshall Memo and was reminded of the efforts taking place at Oak Park, and reminded why we do what we do.<\/p>\n<style><!--\n\/* Font Definitions *\/ @font-face \t{font-family:Times; \tmargin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; \tmso-header-margin:.5in; \tmso-footer-margin:.5in; \tmso-paper-source:0;} div.WordSection1 \t{page:WordSection1;}\n--><\/style>\n<p>In a recent <em>Education Gadfly<\/em> article written by Andy Smarick he says the just-released National Assessment of Educational Progress data from 20 large U.S. cities contain lots of sad news about disadvantaged students.\u00a0 Which indeed it did.\u00a0 Here are a couple of points about the Detroit schools.\u00a0 Oak Park is were many families have moved their children to attempt to avoid similar results.\u00a0 I truly support a parent doing what is necessary to help their child, but that is not a fix for Detroit, it is a flee.\u00a0 The fix is our job.<\/p>\n<style><!--\n\/* Font Definitions *\/ @font-face \t{font-family:\"Courier New\"; Cleveland and Milwaukee are close behind. \u201cWe should all hang our heads in shame if we don\u2019t dramatically intervene in these districts,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoFooter\" style=\"margin-left: .5in; text-indent: -9.0pt; line-height: 17.0pt; mso-line-height-rule: exactly; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: .5in;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Times; mso-bidi-font-family: Times;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">&#8211;<span style=\"font: 7.0pt 'Times New Roman';\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;\">\u201cOnce you disaggregate results, your heart truly breaks,\u201d says Smarick. White and non-poor students in several districts did quite well, pulling up the numbers.
